THE TRAVELING CLASSROOM
Learn Spanish and Travel in Ecuador
Fundación Amauta offers a unique program to learn Spanish while travelling to diverse settings in Ecuador.
Participants will experience four destinations, two in the highlands: Quito, the capital city of Ecuador and the beautiful city of Cuenca, both Cultural Heritage Sites; and two in the coastal region: the picturesque beach town of Montañita and the beach city of Manta. Spending one week on each location to experience different activities and varied adventure opportunities while continuing their studies with the same quality standards and academic follow up.
Faculty & Accommodation Info
Spanish lessons are taught in small groups (2 to 5 in a class) within 6 different ability levels from Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day.*
Tours and activities will be done through the week. Participants have the flexibility to choose the length of their package from 1 to 4 weeks with the possibility to extend their course with private or group lessons in their favourite location upon request.
In order to improve participants’ Spanish skills, accommodation is arranged with a host family with breakfast and dinner included (for Quito, Cuenca and Manta) and in a students’ dorm in Montanita.
To complement their program, students could apply for volunteer work positions (humanitarian or ecological related programs).
*In case we don´t reach our minimum number of students per class in your ability group, your lessons will be replaced with 15 hours of private one on one lessons.
Starting dates and Duration
Program starts every Monday year round. The first week of each month starts in Quito, the second in Cuenca, followed by a week in Montanita, and finally the fourth week in Manta. Participants can decide in which city they would prefer to start, considering set dates.
Sites Information & Activities
Quito
The oldest capital of South America, offers a fantastic cultural agenda: its colonial area, the first in the world to hold the title of Worldwide Heritage Site by UNESCO, blended with a vibrant modern district make the city a unique setting nested in the Andes.
Visits during this first week include:
- Comprehensive city tour in Quito’s Old Town district to discover its superb architecture and colonial treasures
- Papallacta Hot Springs
- Middle of the World Monument
- Cotopaxi National Park (trekking and downhill mountain biking)
- Salsa lessons (once per week)
- Cooking lessons (once per week)
- Cable car (optional with an extra fee)
Cuenca
A World Heritage site by UNESCO since 1999, is a city with a fantastic colonial and modern architecture. Crossed by 4 rivers, Cuenca has a unique taste and sense of tranquillity to enjoy a walk on the green river sides.
Visits during this second week include:
- City tour in Cuenca
- Pumapungo Ruins
- Cojitambo and Ingapirca ruins
- Salsa lessons (once per week)
- Cooking lessons (once per week)
- Banos Hot Springs (optional with an extra fee)
Montañita
The best place in Ecuador to enjoy surfing, the beach, great sunsets and nightlife, and very good volunteer opportunities in both social and ecological projects are found on this small town is located right on the Route of the Sun, a series of great beaches along the coast of Central Ecuador. Visitors from many different countries come to Montanita to experience the warmth of our tropical land, its music and friendly people.
Visits during this third week include:
- Puerto Lopez
- Los Frailes Beach
- Agua Blanca archaeological site
- Isla de la Plata (hike and snorkelling opportunities)
- Salsa lessons (once per week)
- Cooking lessons (once per week)
Manta
An important coastal city and harbour in the province of Manabí, counts with beautiful beaches, a spectacular sea food gastronomy.
Visits during this fourth week include:
- Montecristi, where the Panama Hats are made
- Paragliding in Crucita
- Rafting on Toachi river on the way back to Quito
- Salsa lessons (once per week)
- Cooking lessons (once per week)
The program includes:

- Free airport pick up in Quito
- Public land transportation between cities
- Learning materials
- AMAUTA certificate of participation
- Free access to internet (Quito, Cuenca and Manta)

Not included
International air ticket to Ecuador, alcoholic drinks or extra beverages not detailed in the program, tips or extra personal expenses.
Additional services
Each school may organize additional activities such as parties, games, barbeques, and other social gatherings that participants can enjoy.
