College / University Program

80 hours of Spanish instruction, 4 weeks

week-long trip may be included at the end of the program

This program is for adult students.  Readings may vary according to the interests of the students.

LEVELS:

A placement exam will be given the first day of class to determine ability level. If the college requires a minimum proficiency in Spanish, such as a year or two of Spanish instruction, we can divide the students into the following ability levels:

  • Intermediate
  • Upper intermediate
  • Advanced

If no Spanish instruction is required prior to coming to Ecuador, then a beginner level can be included for students with no previous Spanish background.

Each level includes:

  • Grammar
  • Listening comprehension
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Conversation
  • Vocabulary

READINGS:

Beginners: Short stories

Intermediate: South American and Ecuadorian legends

Upper Intermediate: Spanish and Latin American authors, stories

Advanced: Latin American literature, various authors

THE SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM INCLUDES A SPECIAL ACTIVITY EACH WEEK:

First week:

A special gathering with local university students. The purpose of this activity is to give North American students the opportunity to meet new people and make some friends with whom they can interact and practice Spanish. This activity is carried out on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm and includes dinner.

Second week:

In this activity students go to the local market and buy ingredients to prepare a typical Ecuadorian dish with the help of their homestay families. The students bring the dish to class, explain how it was prepared and share it with the rest of the students.

Third week:

Lecture: topic according to the students’ interests or community service

Fourth week:

Photograph contest

HOMESTAY

We arrange homestays with carefully selected families. Homestays include
meals, laundry, and private bedroom. The student will be a member of the
family, sharing in their activities.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES: OPTIONAL

Monday and Wednesday: Biology or Environment course: 16 hours

Schedule: 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Tuesday and Thursday: Salsa lessons: 8 lessons

Schedule: 4:00-5:00 p.m.

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES: OPTIONAL

  1. Ingapirca trip.  Includes transportation, guide and entry fee.  Families will provide lunch.
  2. Chorro Waterfalls and Yunguilla
  3. Cajas National Park: (ONE DAY) or Cajas National Park plus Manglares Churutes (TWO DAYS)
  4. Weekend trip to Loja.
  5. Weekend trip to the Amazonia.
  6. Family party at the end of program

OTHER OPTIONS

The summer program can include orientation in Quito which includes stay in the hotel and visit to the most important turistical sites in Quito.
